One of the things Mazda pins its messaging on are driving dynamics. There are a few changes for 2019, including an updated G-Vectoring Control Plus system. The first iteration of GVC reduced engine output in response to steering inputs to harness weight transfer. GVC Plus also lightly brakes the outer wheels as the driver returns the steering wheel to centre, post-turn.

However, while people always nod and harrumph along when the importance of oil changes and new windshield wipers are discussed, it isn’t usually discussed why the air filter change is so important.

Wildfire smoke is full of potentially harmful particles that can cause health problems, and as poor air quality continues to blanket the region, it’s important to keep the air in your home clean, experts say.

With higher levels of dust and pollution found in the atmosphere, cabin air filters are increasingly being used in today’s air-conditioned vehicles. Their main function is to filter out dust, soot, smoke and other impurities from the ventilation system to the aircon.

And, lest you think this is strictly a European concern, there are plenty of American repair shops that are asking the same questions. “People are freaking out,” auto mechanic Craig Van Batenburg told the Chicago Tribune last year, noting that some of the resistance to electric car training is strongest in the American Midwest. Resistance that, he believes, was propelled by early rumors of technicians being electrocuted by electric vehicles. “Ninety percent of our industry has done nothing — absolutely nothing — to prepare. They just turn the hybrids and EVs away and say, ‘We don’t work on those cars, go back to Ford or Toyota.’ The fear factor is huge.”

An updated Golf R arrived in April 2016 with LED lights all round, digital dials, a new infotainment system, a 10bhp boost and a number of exterior design tweaks. 

Ian Law, Group Sales and Marketing Director at GUD, explains that there are four kinds of filters in a vehicle namely air, oil, fuel and cabin air.

Back in June Kelly hit the headlines when she admitted she’s altered an image of herself and boyfriend Jeremy Parisi at Royal Ascot, because she wanted to ‘tuck [her] tummy in a little bit’ after gaining weight. 

I also heard, in the recorded conversation, the manager plainly admitting “we messed up and we want to fix it right.”

After the urgency of the Golf R, these might seem rather anaemic, though, which is why Audi’s 362bhp (later to be 395bhp) RS 3 might hold more appeal for those after a performance-focused experience. Yet while the RS 3 is beautifully built and well kitted out, it’s also costly to buy and run, with second-hand prices starting at £30,000.

I’ve had to do this a lot, and, while I really don’t mind getting messy, what bothers me about all this is that it’s so easily avoidable. Just don’t crank those filters down so hard!
