You can have your cabin air filter changed at your local dealership or your favorite mechanic shop at costs that can range anywhere from $50 to $100. If you’re feeling ambitious — or maybe cheap — you can do it yourself for about half that amount, for the cost of parts only. Cabin air filters often are located behind the glove box and are easily accessible by freeing the box from its fasteners. (Again, consult your owner’s manual on this.) You may be surprised — perhaps even disgusted — at what you find clinging to your filter, from leaves and twigs and grime, and maybe even dead bugs. Ew! But, hey, look at it this way: Better in your cabin air filter … than up your nose!

However, sudden impacts to air filters from being dropped from a height whilst still in the unopened carton can cause unseen damage to the element. The perforated metal cage that composes part of the main support is not designed to withstand high impacts. It can possibly become distorted and, as such, put undue contact pressure on the filter media. Over time, this can cause wear of the media as it naturally moves throughout its service life causing a hole which allows dirt to enter the engine.
If you have Bugatti money, dropping 21 large on a fluid change might seem appropriate, but it’s still pretty inflated. $21,000 is about 1.4 percent of the base Veyron’s $1.5 million price tag. Applying that same percentage to a $20,000 new car would result in a fluid change cost of $280, which is sort of high. Then again, technicians don’t need to disassemble half of your Hyundai Elantra to get all the oil out. Either way, it’s not like you’re going to do it all yourself.

Golf R owners can choose fixed or variable servicing. The former is set at 12 months or 10,000 miles; the latter allows up to two years and 18,000 miles between checks. Expect to pay £144 for an oil change, £232 for an intermediate service and £376 for a major inspection.

Many cabin air filters are located behind the glove box and are easily accessible by freeing the glove box from its fasteners; the instructions should be in your car’s owner’s manual. Other cabin air filters are located under the dashboard and may not be easy to reach, or under the hood where fresh air enters the climate control system. Some of these air filters are expensive — as in $50 or more at dealerships — so you could save money by buying a replacement at a parts store or at Cars.com and doing it yourself.
